BRANDON, FL – A Temple Terrace man is in custody after driving recklessly through Brandon during rush-hour traffic and nearly causing a head-on collision.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies received a call Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 4:30 p.m. that a Nissan Altima was driving on the wrong side of Bloomingdale Avenue near Bell Shoals Road. Bystanders also reported seeing the car hit a guard rail and run other drivers off the road.
Sheriff’s deputies caught up with the car as it traveled west on State Road 60 but did not pursue it for fear the driver would speed up and present a greater threat to other drivers.
Instead, the sheriff’s helicopter tracked the car from the air. While keeping tabs on the wayward car, the pilot saw it repeatedly drive on the wrong side of the road, cut off other drivers, drive on sidewalks and through front yards.
At one point, the driver nearly caused a head-on collision with another car, according to the sheriff’s office.
The driver’s mad dash through Brandon came to an end when a sheriff’s patrol unit put down tire deflation devices called stop sticks on Kingsway Road at Edgedale Circle.
The driver, Fady Suleiman, 27, 11705 Hoyt Ave., Temple Terrace, got out of the car and surrendered to deputies. The sheriff’s office said it does not know why he was driving so erratically.
Suleiman has served time in the Florida State Prison on three occasions and was released from his last stay in prison on Oct. 31, 2017. His convictions include assault, robbery home invasion, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving with a suspended and revoked license, possession of marijuana, fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement officers, obstructing an officer, grand theft and forgery.
