Quick Actions Keep Handgun Out Of Dowdell Middle School

TAMPA, FL – Thanks to an alert witness and the quick actions of school staff, a 13-year-old Dowdell Middle School student was prevented from bringing a loaded gun into the school.

On Thursday, April 26 at Dowdell Middle School, 120 Wishing Well Way, Clair-Mel, a student brought a loaded gun onto the campus. A witness saw him take the gun from his backpack and place it in a large tractor tire outside of the school next to the bike rack and told school staff.

The school resource deputy quickly responded and seized the Bersa Thunder .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun.

The student left the campus when he realized the gun had been discovered. His mother found him and returned him to the school at about 4:15 p.m. where he was arrested.
